Cats

Location: Soreng Theater

Presented by Actors Cabaret

"Zingo has given this show his all and everyone's hard work has paid off. Cats is one of the company's best productions in its 31-year history." - Dorothy Velasco, Register Guard

Cats at the Hult CenterBased on the universally popular poetry of T.S. Eliot, Cats tells the story, in song and dance, of the annual gathering of Jellicle cats, when one special cat is selected to ascend to the Heaviside layer. A true musical theatre phenomenon, Cats opened in London's New London Theatre on May 11, 1981 and ran for a record-setting 21 years, and thrilled sudiences on Broadway for 18 years.

By thinking theatrically and not limiting ourselves to expectations based on earlier productions, our Actors Cabaret production of Cats will focus on the poetry of T. S. Elliot and the lyrics of Andrew Lloyd Webber, rather than extra-textual production elements such as dance. Perhaps for the first time ever, the character relationships and the storyline of Cats will take the primary position, with the dance serving as a means to express the characters relationships, rather than being an end in itself.

"The energy Zingo saved on the set was poured into the incredible costumes. Each costume is different, all created by Zingo with input from the actors on how the character of each cat should look and move. Real and fake fur, hand painted tights, individually crafted wigs and whimsical makeup - the costumes alone could have stolen the show. Fortunately, the cast gave the clothing a run for its money... Essentially, ACE presents a study in how a small town theater can reinterpret a big-budget musical." - Anna Grace, Eugene Weekly
