First Friday ArtWalk hosted stops for March 5th:
#1 Jacobs Gallery – Hult Center
From February 19 – March 27, 2010, Jacobs Gallery will feature a two-part exhibit: “Carnival of Color,” which displays the fanciful figurines of Louie Gizyn and a show called “Impressions” by a group known as Material ARTistry, made up of Sandra McMorris Johnson, Jae McDonald, Janet Hiller, MarDee Hansen, and Sally Zehrung. Louie Gizyn majored in art since kindergarten and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1976. For the past thirty years, she has been working in clay and cloth. Whether large or small, each mime figurine is individually designed as a one-of-kind piece. The head of each character is hand-pinched out of stoneware clay and then fired, sanded, painted, and varnished. The body of each figure is constructed with a skeletal armature of wood and wire, or welded steel rod. The bulk of the body is sculpted with fiberfill and cloth. Lastly, she creates a costume in which she tries to maintain a balance between deliberation and spontaneity.
The other part of the exhibition is “Impressions” by Material ARTistry. Material ARTistry is a new group, composed of five artists of a like mind but broad experience in the fiber and fine arts. A passion for creating art that makes use of fiber, textiles, thread, and other seemingly humble materials brings together their diverse visions. Each is drawn to the idea of presenting ideas which appeal to two senses simultaneously--the visual and the tactile. Each works in some way with cloth, but the results range from quilts, to dolls, to collage structures, and all challenge conventional notions of textile art.
#2 Vistra Framing and Gallery – 160 E Broadway
Beginning March 5th, Vistra Framing and Gallery will feature the luscious oils of Kris Ibach. On display will be her large scale portraits, as well as a few miniature portraits. The show runs through April 1, 2010. Kris Ibach has shown at many Eugene venues, including the Lane Arts Council’s Gallery at the Airport in 2009, the Maude Kerns Art Center’s Track Town USA exhibit in 2008, which was a juried show that featured artists from around the country, the Jacobs Gallery in 2004, and Café Zenon. Just last December, she was also one of the stars of our own Small Works shows here at Vistra Framing and Gallery. To further add to her artistic resume, she has also worked at the Maude Kerns Art Center, teaching painting classes and assisting as an art critique of students’ work and as a jewelry designer for Jody Coyote in the 1990s. In 2001, she received one of the three Juror’s Awards in the Mayors Art Show for her oil painting Julian. She was also one of the Third Place recipients in Foothill-DeAnza Community College’s 2000-2001 National Student Art Competition.
# 3 Goldworks Jewelry Art Studio - 169 E Broadway
Robert Dewitt Adams has lived in the Pacific Northwest since 1996, and earned his MFA from the University of Oregon in 2007. In addition to teaching art at Lane Community College, Robert is Art Director for the Community Center for Performing Arts in Eugene, and recently collaborated on set design with the Ballet Fantastique for its Hult Center performance Visions d’Amour. Speaking about the upcoming show, he states, “I began by using detritus from a conservation corps job cleaning streams. This current series of work centers around my 2009 residency at the Vermont Studio Center, where I was intrigued by road construction intervening in the classically beautiful landscape. I invite the viewer to join me in thinking in new ways, and in adding new interpretations to the connections that I make.”

Full City Coffee Roasters will feature the work of Judy Carter, Mark Longstreet, Tony Brown, and Patty Duncan.
